The United Way of America created the Alexis de Tocqueville Society in 1972 to acknowledge at the national, regional, and local level those leadership givers who make annual United Way contributions of $10,00 or more. It was founded in honor of the French historian Alexis de Tocqueville who in the early nineteenth century, wrote about the American spirit of volunteerism.

"When an American asks for the cooperation of their fellow citizens, it is seldom refused; and I have often seen it afforded spontaneously, and with great will." Alexis de Tocqueville

Because Tocqueville recognized, applauded, and immortalized the voluntary spirit that lives in America's heart, United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley honors those who contribute $10,000 or more through United Way with membership in the Alexis de Tocqueville Society.
